At least a few times a week now, thanks to COVID-19, we field a call in our offices from an individual in dire need. These callers are often anxious. They may be getting evicted soon and have nowhere to live; sometimes, a short food supply is the issue.
“There are so many resources,” we have been hearing. “We don’t know how to connect.”
Navigating social services is always frustrating and time-consuming, but United Way Worldwide has a solution to the confusion and run-around, and people in our region can access it, too. Dial “2-1-1,” and get help.
Like 9-1-1, 2-1-1 is an emergency call for help. Staffed by professionals, it can be accessed via phone or computer, and the program is free, confidential and serves people of all ages, 24-7. You’ll find information on everything from food, healthcare, and nutrition programs to housing options, utility relief, employment and educational opportunities, and services for veterans.
With the financial devastation wrought by COVID, use of 2-1-1 has skyrocketed. In Hampshire County, call volume is up 380 percent from 1,297 calls in 2019 to 4,930 over the past year. The top needs were rent assistance and childcare.
If you need help—or you know someone who does—call 2-1-1, and get connected.
